Destyn with her children Lizzy and Ivan
On July 21, 2019 Destyn Sublett was taken from this world way to soon.
Destyn was a wonderful and sweet, yet fierce, woman. She never backed down, she worked hard, she was an amazing mother to two beautiful children and she was one of the true good ones. You know those ‘good’ people that you have to like and love because she has that good of a heart - that was Destyn.
Destyn and I had many chats over the years about good horse people and good sportsmanship - Destyn had been on every level from being an accomplished youth rider, a trainer, and instructor and then as her illness attempted to take her down she still rode as an amateur rider and adapted her riding attire to a side-saddle habit so she could still ride and support our shows. That to me is dedication.
With the permission and support of Destyn’s family, I have created the ‘Destyn Sublett Unicorn Award’. This award will be a perpetual award (we are still raising funds to buy the proper perpetual trophy) and this award will be given to an individual, or group, that I deem the ‘Unicorn’ of the year. You don’t have to show to be a unicorn. You don’t have to own a horse to be a unicorn. All you have to do is be that stand out gentle hearted good person who is involved in our shows and someone who I think Destyn would admire for their efforts.

2019 Unicorn Award Winner
Debbie Wiegmann
If you have a horse, have shown a horse or attended a horse show in Sonoma County and the surrounding areas, then you just might know Debbie Wiegmann.
Debbie dedicates what seems to be every moment of her day to supporting and promoting the equine scene for so many local, and national, horse shows. She is the mastermind and work behind countless achievements for many local clubs including the Wine Country Arabians and the North Coast Horse Association. To be fair, I think us at North Coast forced ourselves on Debbie but she is so gracious that she has taken us under her wing instead of changing her phone number.
Last year I was standing around talking to Destyn and she asked me 'how could Debbie possibly be at every single damn horse show at once - does the woman ever sleep'?! We laughed and I said I had wondered the same thing many times and Destyn said 'Well. She is f**king amazing'. No truer words have ever been spoken.
Debbie, thank you for your countless contributions to our equine world, to the youth riders and adult riders. To the large barns and the 'odd man outs'. For your constant level head, massive horse show problem solving skills and your ability to calm a borderline meltdown show manager at the drop of a hat. For you dedication to the horses, not only your beloved Arabians, but also equally loving our varieties of breeds and disciplines. Thank you for always having what we need, from glitter to saddle soap and thank you for being the staple of good sportsmanship and kind words.
Congratulations - you are truly a unicorn.

How to Contribute:
The cost of the perpetual trophy is approx. 700.00 including the first years engraving.
In addition, every year we will give each winner a plaque to keep which is about 45.00 a year.
Any funds that go over the amount we need will be kept in a separate fund within our association and will be used for the sole purpose of the trophy, plaques, engraving and to sponsor Destyn's favorite classes, the 'Walk Walk' classes. This horse show class was a suggestion by Destyn to give an opportunity for anyone and everyone the chance to get in the show ring and not have to go fast or be scared - to have a chance to show if they were new or nervous or overcoming a fear - it is a way to shine and be just as important as every other show participant. We hope to add another 'walk walk' performance class in the future and we will keep it part of the tradition of our show.
If you would like to be a contributor to the award and future award plaques on honors in Destyn's name, the best way right now, that does not cost fees, is to Venmo Marie Boyd at @Marie-Boyd83 or to mail a check made out to

Please note in your payment if you would like your name kept anonymous or to be listed as a donor.
